Cookies!

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

These are the first cookies I’ve ever cook. I tried to use the same recipe as Jaimi but at the end, my cookies taste more like hard bread. Later on I started to experiment with the recipe and make a second round of cookies, these ones quite better.

Beginning of my Korean adventure

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Last Friday I met my parents. They were really happy because I returned home after almost 4 months living in Canada. Now they can feel me again, touch me and speak to me looking at my eyes. Everything was being nice but after a couple of hours they asked me what I plan to do with my life from now on. Their faces changed when I told them that I was planning to get a job overseas, and that I was not thinking in a country as close as Canada. This time I want to go really far. That means more time from my parent’s home. Mum is really worried with me but surprinsingly she is aware of my situation. She is not pushing me, she is trying to suggest me to stay close but she is not angry. I think that maybe she was already expecting something similar or maybe she thinks that now I’m speaking about traveling far but I’m not going to really make the decision or that it’s beyond my means. We will see what happen.

Now I’m on my way to Valladolid. I’m traveling on an old train and not using the newer, bright and faster Spanish bullet train to save a few bucks. Very bad idea, I think this is the last time I’m going to do something like that. This train is uncomfortable, noisy and slow. Plus I need to be 2,5 hours traveling in this old, dirty train where the newer and bright bullet train needs only 1 hour. I think I’m getting old!

Travelling…

Last Monday I went to the Korean embassy. They where very kind and explain me that it should not be impossible for me to get a job there but it’s going to be tough. The good news is that in Seoul there are lots of businesses that work in English environment (not Korean). So speak a proper Korean it’s not a requirement for me although I will need to work hard to improve my English and learn basic Korean.

The bad news is that probably I will need to go there firstly as a tourist and look for a job in a proactive way, sending resumes from a local address and make interviews. When a local business offer me a contract I will need to return Madrid with the Korean contract on my pocket. After that I will need to apply for a visa and wait for 4 days. And then return to Korea.

So I will need to fly all over the world, arrive at Seoul, look for a job, return to Madrid, apply for a visa and wait for a few days. And then fly all over the world again.

Sounds crazy. I’m 25. Maybe this is my last adventure.

Soccer!

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Last Sunday I went to the Bernabeu stadium to see a soccer match between Real Valladolid an Real Madrid. I don’t like hate watching soccer but the Bernabeu is one of the biggest stadiums in Europe and as Valladolid is a close city, a lot of people from my city come here to see the match.

So I bought the ticket and I went to the stadium with 10 friends. The stadium is wonderful giant crazy, with 70000 people yelling at the same time you can feel great power and energy. I was more interested in the people around me that in the match but at the end, we were really disappointed because our team suffered our worst score ever. 7-0. 7-0. In soccer. Yeah. Painful.

This is the face of 5-0

Clubbing in Madrid

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

This last weekend many of my friends come from Valladolid because of the soccer match between the Real Madrid and Real Valladolid. We went out two nights in the wild Madrid’s nightlife. The first night we went to a cool house party. The host had a singstar game and it was a lot of fun to sing popular Spanish songs after 3 months in Canada. The other party was even cooler because it was a costume party. I didn’t had time to buy or prepare a real costume so I used some clothing of my 95-years-old-granpa and a old straw hat to become “Julian Muñoz rociero” which is a famous guy in Spain. At the end I was closer to a farmer’s appearance but it doesn’t matter, the party was a lot of fun and I met a lot of interesting people. After the parties we ended the nights in two popular clubs close to Gran Via

My first day in Madrid

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

I’m writing this post while in the bus, on my way to my old University. I want to go there to visit my roommates and all the friends I have still there. I’m going to go also to the international relationship agency to start the process to evaluate my degree in Canada. I have no plans in the short term to work in Canada but I think it will be useful to know what is my degree’s equivalent in Canada, a document I can also use in the US and in other Commonwealth countries.

I’m suffering a strange cultural shock, specially surprising because I had been only 3 months and a half in Canada. Everything appear slighty different to my senses. The streets are… different because the urbanism is completely different, the stores are different, the cars are different but specially this morning I realized that the people is completely different. There are no black people. There are no asians. And the clothing style is different too.

Another very interesting thing is that usually I’m thinking in English and actually my ideas come to my mind in English. Basically I find myself traslating from English to Spanish and I realized that I have forgot lots and lots of spanish vocabulary. That must be the reason for me to say “good morning” to my 95 years old grandfather when he had waked me up instead of the traditional spanish “buenos dias”. He wasn’t surprised thought, he had lost a lot of hearing capacity in the last years and I’m sure that he didn’t realize that i was speaking in English because I’m sure that he didn’t listen half of my words anyway.

Another interesting matter is when something annoy me and I say “fuck” instead of “joder” or for example, today in the subway, when I had push an old man and I said to him “excuse me” instead of “perdon”.

And the subway… Madrid’s subway trains and stations appear to be sci-fi compared with the TTC. I realized that when I enter in “La Moncloa”, one of the newer stations in the subway system. My first unconscious thought was “this is like a space port!“.

Is really interesting, is like rediscover Madrid again. I think that I will notice lots of other interesting things now that I can see the city from another perspective.
